Wasserman Schultz on Biden’s Swift, Forceful Response to the Maduro Regime’s Election Meddling

I commend President Biden for swiftly reinstating strict sanctions on the profit centers of this corrupt Venezuelan regime and enforcing the Barbados Agreement, which stipulates that U.S. sanctions snap back if Maduro fails to provide a free and fair election.

Washington, DC – U.S. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (FL-25) released the following statement in response to the Biden Administration’s swift and forceful response to the failure of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro’s regime to honor the Barbados Agreement, which seeks free and fair elections in Venezuela:

“I commend President Biden for swiftly reinstating strict sanctions on the profit centers of this corrupt Venezuelan regime and enforcing the Barbados Agreement, which stipulates that U.S. sanctions snap back if Maduro fails to provide a free and fair election. The Venezuelan people overwhelmingly selected María Corina Machado to unite the opposition for the 2024 presidential election.

By banning her from the ballot, the Maduro regime blatantly disenfranchises 2.4 million Venezuelan voters, including Venezuelan Americans, for exercising their basic rights. Only a peaceful transition of power will reverse the tide of millions of Venezuelans fleeing Maduro’s repression. As co-chair of the Venezuela Democracy Caucus, I applaud the President’s response and urge continued use of all available tools, including diplomacy, to protect human rights, promote democracy, and hold criminals accountable in Venezuela.”
