Wasserman Schultz Confronts NFL’s Toxic Workplace, Lack of Black Leadership and Transparency Issues

Washington D.C. – Today,  U.S. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (FL-23) questioned those who witnessed the WashingtonCommanders toxic workplace environment, and spotlighted the National Football League’s need to confront issues of racism and sexism during a House Committee on Oversight and Reform roundtable, noting that the NFL enjoys massive taxpayer benefits and a global platform, yet “refuses to seriously address” these lingering problems.

“These witnesses spoke out at great personal and professional risk, and in my community, Miami Dolphins Coach Brian Flores just did the same thing: he told his truth, and for that, risks never coaching in the NFL again,” Wasserman Schultz said afterward. “Colin Kaepernick suffered a similar fate. Sexism, racism, homophobia and bigotry destroys lives, promising careers, stifles real talent, and taints this game for millions of NFL fans. Washington’s team and the NFL claim they are committed to addressing these issues, yet refuse to release the investigative workplace report. They must release the report immediately and when the NFL looks into the Flores’ case – which it must – full transparency is needed. The NFL enjoys too much public and taxpayer support for Congress to remain on the sidelines. I am confident we will continue to expose the harmful and insidious conduct and practices of the NFL, and demand accountability to remove the stain that has sullied the game and its leaders.”
