Women’s History month Statement
Washington, March 1, 2020 Courageous women spoke out, marched and braved the contempt of society and the law, not just to secure a real voice in their own home and community, but to make a more perfect union by winning the right to vote. That epic struggle must be told, and during Women’s History Month, it is. This year marks a century since the 19th Amendment was ratified, the year women finally secured the national franchise.U.S. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (FL-23) released the following statement on the start of Women’s History Month:
“Courageous women spoke out, marched and braved the contempt of society and the law, not just to secure a real voice in their own home and community, but to make a more perfect union by winning the right to vote. That epic struggle must be told, and during Women’s History Month, it is. This year marks a century since the 19th Amendment was ratified, the year women finally secured the national franchise. Yet that fight was not done. It took 45 years and passage of the Voting Rights Act before all black women secured legally-secure suffrage. Still now, agents of suppression act in broad daylight to deter all American citizens from partaking in our democracy. And it’s women who lead yet again on the fight to block this suppression, whether it’s the Fair Districts Florida constitutional amendments or voting rights restoration efforts in Florida or the Fair Fight movement in Georgia. This Women’s History Month, we all stand on the shoulders of these “sheroes“ for equality, and honor the noble values they enshrine in this great nation.”
