Wasserman Schultz: Trump Executive Orders Gut Social Security, Fail to Address America’s Needs

Washington DC – U.S. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (FL-23) released the following statement in response to President Trump’s announcement of executive orders today:“From a luxury golf course fairway, Donald Trump clearly can’t see how badly families are suffering due to his derelict handling of this pandemic-driven economic crisis. Today’s paltry pronouncements are likely unconstitutional, fall radically short of addressing anti-virus efforts, local government layoffs, the ransacking of our postal system and pressing election threats. His eviction moratorium is hollow and he ignores rental assistance and school funding needs. Worse, unemployment benefits would be slashed that Democrats fought so hard for in the CARES Act. Amid today’s train wreck of neglect, Trump still manages to needlessly imperil seniors’ Social Security and Medicare benefits. The only certainties his executive orders deliver are more debt for working families, deeper state and local layoffs and a continuing refusal to address the testing and tracing measures needed to pull us out of this pandemic quagmire. These orders fail American families by allowing this virus to inflict more death and economic hardship on us all. Republicans need to get back to the table and work with Democrats to bring real relief to struggling families and communities.
