Wasserman Schultz on Republicans Rejecting TPS for Venezuelans

Washington, July 30, 2019 “Democrats will not stop fighting for it and Republicans should not use Venezuelans as pawns in their political game.”

(Sunrise, Fla.) – U.S. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (FL-23) issued the following statement in response to Senate Republicans decision today to take a six-week break without passing a bill that would grant Temporary Protected Status for Venezuelans. The Congresswoman also addressed suggestions that TPS is not needed. The House passed a TPS bill for Venezuelans last week:“Republicans have failed the Venezuelan people yet again, this time by rejecting a solid TPS bill in the Senate today, which could bring swift certainty and peace of mind to the thousands who have sought refuge in the U.S. from the murderous Maduro regime. Dangling the prospect of instead offering them Deferred Enforced Departure, or DED, is a deceptive dodge. TPS is not permanent, as Republicans know, and a DED designation is subject to the whims of an erratic, xenophobic President who regularly uses the White House to wage war on migrants seeking refuge, including children. TPS is the best solution. Democrats will not stop fighting for it and Republicans should not use Venezuelans as pawns in their political game.”
