Wasserman Schultz, Diaz-Balart Launch Bipartisan Congressional Venezuela Democracy Caucus

Washington DC – Today Representatives Debbie Wasserman Schultz (FL-23) and Mario Diaz-Balart (FL-25) announced the launch of the bipartisan Venezuela Democracy Caucus to support freedom for the Venezuelan people who have endured years of suffering under brutal and illegitimate tyranny.

Wasserman Schultz, a Democrat, and Diaz-Balart, a Republican, will lead the Caucus, which will serve as a bipartisan effort to address the grave humanitarian and political crisis in Venezuela.

“It is critical we keep a bright spotlight on the criminal and human tragedy taking place in Venezuela. What is unfolding before our eyes is an epic humanitarian crisis. More than four million people have fled due to political chaos, worsening economic conditions, and shortages of food and medicine,” Wasserman Schultz said. “So we must do what we can to stop it. All of us know that when Americans stand together, we stand stronger. And the best way to turn Venezuela’s situation around is by uniting our efforts, and working together, in a bipartisan fashion.”

The Venezuela Democracy Caucus will focus a spotlight on the Venezuelan crisis and support policies to swiftly restore democracy and provide humanitarian assistance to its people.

“The world needs to see the corrupt Maduro regime for what it truly is: An anti-democratic, criminal regime that inflicts horrific suffering on its own people, blocking the delivery of food and essential supplies in a desperate attempt to cling to power,” Wasserman Schultz said. “The best way to make the world see that is by marshalling all our political resources and working toward a common goal. That’s why I am both energized and hopeful by what we are doing here today: launching the bipartisan Congressional Venezuela Democracy Caucus.”

Other initial Democratic Members in the Caucus include: Reps. Albio Sires (NJ-8), House Foreign Affairs Western Hemisphere Subcommittee Chairman; Ted Deutch (FL-22); Brendan Boyle (PA-2). Darren Soto (FL-9); Donna Shalala (FL-27); Debbie Mucarsel-Powell (FL-26). The initial Republican Members include: Steve Chabot (OH-1); Paul Cook (CA-8); Adam Kinzinger (IL-16); Ted Yoho (FL-3); John Rutherford (FL-4); Jennifer Gonzalez-Colon (PR); Francis Rooney (FL-19); Michael Waltz (FL-6).
