Rape is rape.

H.R. 3, “No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act”

No matter how you look at it, rape is rape.

This week, I spoke out against H.R. 3, the “No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act.”  This latest anti-abortion measure presented by Republicans redefines rape, essentially stating that unless the victim physically fought her attacker, the act was not rape—not even if the woman was unconscious, drugged, or mentally incapable of consenting.   If passed, H.R. 3 would deny federally-assisted abortion coverage to these women, and undo decades of progress we’ve made when it comes to supporting victims of these atrocious crimes.

Suggesting that it is okay to force a woman to carry an unwanted pregnancy to term because she didn’t fight back, because she was drugged or scared, is simply unacceptable.  It’s absolutely inexcusable.

The proposal of this bill is outrageous and nothing but a violent act against women.

“Some kind” of rape is NOT okay.  It’s simple.  Rape is when a woman doesn’t consent to have sex, and that is whether she is conscious, unconscious, mentally stable, or not mentally stable.

Even though Republicans say they want government out of our private lives, this is the most intrusive governmental act that we’ve seen to date.

In my more than 19 years in public service, I have never seen such a blatant attempt to infringe upon personal freedoms.   As your Representative, I promise to continue to work for what is right and will fight against this egregious offense against all American women.
