(Washington, DC) – SCORE, America’s premier source of free and confidential business advice with 364 offices nationwide comprised of 12,400 volunteers, has awarded Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz (FL-20) with the Congressional Champion of Small Business Award.  The award was presented to the Congresswoman at a Washington D.C. awards dinner Thursday night.  Rep. Wasserman Schultz was the only member of the House of Representatives to receive this distinction.  Sen. Mary Landrieu (LA) received the Senate award.

“We are pleased to honor Rep. Wasserman Schultz for her vocal support of SCORE and America’s small businesses,” said SCORE CEO Ken Yancey.  “She is a dedicated advocate for entrepreneurship and the value that SCORE’s expert volunteers provide in communities across the country.”

“SCORE has served as a lifeline for millions of small businesses all across America,” said Rep. Wasserman Schultz. “Through their education and counseling programs, SCORE continues to be a premier source for guidance to current and prospective entrepreneurs.  I am deeply honored to be selected as a Champion of Small Business.  America has come a long way in turning our economy around in the past year, but we have further to go.  I will continue to support the engine of our economy, small business entrepreneurship, through my work in Congress.”

Since its founding in 1964, SCORE has helped 8.5 million small businesses start.  Each year, SCORE helps almost 20,000 small businesses start and played a role in the launch of now well known companies like The Vermont Teddy Bear Company, Vera Bradley Designs, and Jelly Belly Candy.

The annual SCORE Awards recognize and celebrate the people and businesses that support economic growth and social progress in America –small business entrepreneurs.

“The SCORE Awards is equal parts inspiration, celebration and recognition honoring our nation’s most exciting small businesses, together with leading corporate and government small business advocates,” said SCORE CEO Ken Yancey.  “The success of small business is the stimulus that will propel our nation through the current economy.”

The award for Rep. Wasserman Schultz comes as she prepares to host a free Small Business Workshop in South Florida on Saturday, September 25, 2010 beginning at 9 a.m. at the Broward County Convention Center.  The workshop will feature federal, state, and local governments along with regional and national business organizations to provide marketing, management and financial guidance to small business owners or those interested in starting a small business.

“My hope is that the information we provide will help to strengthen area small businesses and encourage South Florida entrepreneurs,” said Rep. Wasserman Schultz.

The Congresswoman hosted a similar event which drew roughly 1,500 people in May of last year.
