They Have No Shame
I could hardly believe what I was reading.
A recent story from Reuters News reported in disturbing detail that the nation’s largest health insurance company is singling out breast cancer patients and dropping their coverage:
They had no idea that WellPoint was using a computer algorithm that automatically targeted them and every other policyholder recently diagnosed with breast cancer. The software triggered an immediate fraud investigation, as the company searched for some pretext to drop their policies, according to government regulators and investigators. [Reuters]
Now, as someone who was diagnosed with breast cancer just two short years ago, I can tell you that receiving that news from your doctor is unlike anything you’ve ever experienced.
Personally, I felt like I’d been hit with an anvil.
I can only imagine what it must have felt like for these women, knowing that they literally had to fight for their lives, and then on top of that, to have to fight their insurance company over some computer generated fraud charge?
That’s JUST PLAIN WRONG.
That is JUST PLAIN GREED.
The good news is that the health insurance reform law that we passed makes this practice illegal.
Because when you are facing the toughest fight of your life, you shouldn’t have to worry about whether or not you’re going to have insurance to get the care you need.
