National Association of Insurance Commissioners Takes Action to Prohibit Discrimination in Life Insurance Based on Foreign Travel

(Washington, DC)  —  Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz released the following statement this afternoon in response to state law guidelines adopted by the National Association of Insurance Commissioners to protect consumers from unfair discrimination in the sale of life insurance:

“I commend the National Association of Insurance Commissioners for adopting guidelines to safeguard Americans’ ability to travel. This is an important step in the effort to protect consumers from unfair discrimination due to lawful international travel, and I encourage states to quickly adopt these minimum standards.”

Rep. Wasserman Schultz has worked on federal legislation the past three years to protect consumers who are denied life insurance simply because they might travel to certain international destinations. Provisions to prohibit this discrimination have passed the House of Representatives as part of the Terrorism Risk Insurance Act (TRIA) in the 109th and 110th Congresses.

“The freedom to travel is a fundamental tenet of our independence as Americans and is integral to our ability to remain competitive in a global economy. We must preserve this important aspect of American life,” said Rep. Wasserman Schultz.
