Wasserman Schultz Statement on the 48th Anniversary of Roe v. Wade
The Supreme Court’s Roe v. Wade decision 48 years ago today legalized abortion and affirmed women’s autonomy over our own bodies.
The Supreme Court’s Roe v. Wade decision 48 years ago today legalized abortion and affirmed women’s autonomy over our own bodies. Yet sweeping state-level abortion bans — even in rape and incest cases — and four years of Trump Administration legal assaults and court-packing have undermined this landmark ruling. Fortunately, we now have allies in the White House.
President Biden and Vice President Harris have the power to unravel Trump’s anti-choice legacy, from reinstating Title X to repealing the global gag rule. But Biden and a Democratic Congress face a slew of Trump-appointed federal judges and a Supreme Court packed with anti-abortion ideologues. That is why on this Roe v. Wade anniversary, pro-choice advocates must fully re-commit to protecting a women’s agency over her own body, and defeat any politician who stands in the way of a woman’s personal autonomy.
