Wasserman Schultz Statement on Iraq Study Group Report
(Washington, DC) — Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz released the following statement regarding the findings of the bipartisan Iraq Study Group:
“Our brave men and women serving in uniform have long deserved a fair and honest assessment of the situation on the ground in Iraq. Many of our nation’s troops have served multiple tours in war-torn Iraq and have understood for some time now that the country is falling into a civil war. It is irresponsible that the Bush Administration continues to maintain that Iraq is not in a civil war.
“The 21,000 American wounded, 2,900 American fatalities and the over $400 billion price tag of the war in Iraq are painful endorsements of the bipartisan Iraq Study Group’s report assertions that the “situation in Iraq is grave and deteriorating.” As the Commander in Chief, the President is responsible for providing our troops and the American people with leadership and the best plan for success. President Bush has failed on both accounts. We must work to ensure that Iraq is able to provide its own national security and is politically and economically independent. I hope that the President will seriously consider the advice of this bipartisan commission, and I look forward to working with my colleagues and the Administration in finding an end to this war.”
