Sun-Sentinel: U.S. House District 23 – Choose Wasserman Schultz
South Florida Sun-Sentinel
Debbie Wasserman Schultz – U.S. House District 23
She may be controversial, something that comes with the territory as head of the Democratic National Committee. However, U.S. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz is also highly effective, well-versed on local and national issues, and one of the best-known members of Congress.
The 46-year-old Weston Democrat is seeking a fifth term in office, and the Sun Sentinel Editorial Board strongly urges voters to return her to Washington.
Wasserman Schultz wants the next Congress to keep the focus on the economy and job creation. She also wants to work on adding solvency to Medicare and Social Security, and she has worked on securing funding for Everglades restoration.
A staunch advocate, fundraiser and supporter of the Obama Administration and many of its policies, she prides herself on her ability to work with Republican colleagues on several pieces of legislation, the most recent being the Child Protection Act, which increases penalties for the possession of child pornography.
The other candidate in the race is Republican Karen Harrington, 48, a restaurateur from Davie. This is her second campaign to oust Wasserman Schultz after a failed bid two years ago. Harrington is aware of the political and financial challenges she faces, but, if elected, she vows to work to reform the tax code, trim regulations and restore fiscal discipline.
